Shelter From The Storm (Nemo Dragonfly Tent Review)
Updated: Sep 28, 2022
Are you looking for a lightweight one-person tent system that's perfect for a backpacker? Look no further than the Nemo Dragonfly!
Hi Everybody, Jason here from WiseBuysGuys. As some of you may know, I'm an avid backpacker who goes out as often as possible. I always either use a tent or a hammock system for shelter.
Sometimes when you're camping, there are no trees, or you're above the tree line, so you need a tent rather than a hammock. My go-to tent is the Nemo Dragonfly 1! It's one of the most ultra-light, freestanding, one-person tents you'll find on the market.
The Nemo Dragonfly 1 is highly rated, and I find it to be a fantastic tent. The maximum weight of the item is 2 pounds 11 ounces, but on the trail, I slim it down to about 2 pounds 3 ounces by leaving behind some components (bags they come in). Perhaps one of my favorite parts of the Dragonfly is the simplicity of the set-up. The tent, fly, and poles are color-coded, so you never have to worry about lining up only to realize the poles weren't correct, or you have to start over for whatever reason.
So, I've used this tent about 10 or 12 times already, five being in the rain and once in hail. I found that the tent does exactly what it needs to do, and that's to keep water and moisture out. I've always stayed dry, and my stuff was safe, so the rainfly that comes with this tent is very useful. It's worth noting that the Dragonfly does allow for additional deployment to keep the rainfly off the tent, but I've never had to use it.
As far as one-person tents go, the Nemo Dragonfly is actually very roomy inside. I'm 5' 8" and find that I still have about a foot above my head and below my feet when I'm lying down. I love that I'm able to roll over and move freely while also having plenty of room to store my shoes, backpack, and cooking gear. Just beware that if you're a really tall guy (>6’2”), you may want to look at another tent. However, I do think this system will work well for most people.
Another great thing about the Nemo Dragonfly is that the tent has three inside pockets, all of which I've found extremely helpful. All of these features, combined with the fact that you can leave the rain tarp off and enjoy watching the stars or moon from inside your Dragonfly, make this system worth it. Having the mesh cover about 60 percent of the tent also makes it ideal for hot nights and easy for you to monitor your surroundings.
Here's a quick look at everything I love about the Nemo Dragonfly 1 Tent System:
Extremely Lightweight
Offers Plenty of Space
Mesh Allows for Outdoor Nighttime Viewing
Freestanding
Color Coded and Easy to Set Up
Effective Rain System
Ultimately, I love the Nemo Dragonfly 1 tent system! I've used it in the High Rockies, the High Uintas, and several places in Arizona, making it my go-to tent. I've always found it to be a great shelter system and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable, lightweight, freestanding tent.
There you have it! I'd give the Nemo Dragonfly 5 stars! What do you think? Leave a comment below and let us know!
